Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep

BSP Nov 2018 headaches

Bottom Line:

Staying up late one night usually only results in feeling a little tired the next day, but when this happens day after day, it can really start to negatively affect your life. Research has shown that a lack of proper sleep can result in irritability, increased stress, a weakened immune system, and even joint pains. However, by developing a few healthy habits, you’ll be able to ensure that your brain and body get the rest the deserve, so you are ready to have a productive next day.

Why it Matters:

Practicing a relaxing nighttime ritual, such as powering down your electronics and reading a book, can help prepare your body for a good night's sleep - and don’t forget the TV. While some people like to sleep with the television on, researchers have found that minimizing background noise can actually help your brain get more rest. In our own office, we’ve also heard from countless patients that they get a better night’s sleep after getting adjusted, which makes sense considering the numerous benefits of Chiropractic care.

  • Wind down for approximately 30 minutes before bed by turning off your electronics.
  • Minimize background noise to help your brain get much-deserved rest.
  • Many patients report a more restful sleep after getting adjusted.

Next Steps:

Looking for more tips on how you can get a better night's sleep? Chiropractic care can decrease the stress you hold in those muscles supporting your neck and shoulders, helping you wake up well rested and ready for a productive day!

The Best Sleep Position

BSP Sept 2018 headaches

Bottom Line:

One of the most common questions we get from patients is: “What's the best sleeping position?” Considering you spend nearly one-third of your life sleeping, this is an important question to ask! Top researchers have found one of the best positions to sleep is on your side with your head supported, shoulders centered, and a pillow between your legs. This allows for the best alignment of your spine and reduces the pressure on your neck, low back, hips, and legs – all of which leads to a more restful night of sleep.

Why it Matters:

Sleeping is the time where your body can maximize rest and recovery. Not only can a lack of sleep cause grogginess the next day, but chronic sleep issues can lead to depression, insomnia, and even make aches and pains worse! If you have ever woken up with a “crick” in your neck, you know how taxing an awkward sleeping position can be on your spine. Maintaining a neutral position and keeping your spine in alignment overnight is an essential part of waking up energized and ready to conquer the day.

  • Chronic sleep disturbances have been linked to depression and many common pain syndromes.
  • Maintaining proper spinal alignment at night can decrease your aches and pains.
  • Sleeping on your side with your head and legs supported is the best sleep position for your spine.

Next Steps:

Tonight, when you lie in bed, take a look and make sure your nose and belly button are in alignment. If they are, it’s a good sign your spine is in both an optimal and comfortable sleep posture. Then, take a small pillow and place it between your knees to give your legs and hips that proper added support. Following these quick tips will help you get into the best position to have a great night's sleep.

Sleeping Well Can Keep You Healthy

BSP Sept 2018 headaches

Bottom Line:

New research has shown that not only can a good night’s sleep keep you mentally sharp, but it can also help you stay healthy by strengthening your immune system. For years physicians have believed that sleep supports the healing process, and now new evidence has been discovered that indicates sleep also plays a role in regulating your immune function. Your immune system is the complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that protect your body from disease, so keeping that system functioning at its highest level is very important to your overall health and wellness.

Why it Matters:

While you’re asleep, your central nervous system is in constant communication with your immune system. Many immune system functions operate on a 24 hour cycle, just like your sleep schedule. In fact, your T-cells, which are some of the most important immune cells, are very, very active while you’re asleep. Everyone may not require the same amount of sleep, but the research is clear: getting a good night's sleep will help bolster your immune system.

  • Your body uses sleep as its time to rest and recover.
  • Sleep patterns are tightly linked to your immune function.
  • Chronic sleep issues promote inflammation and pain.

Next Steps:

Sleeping well has been proven to be an essential part of staying healthy. Sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, can make it extremely difficult to get a good night's sleep and leave you feeling tired and sleepy all day. If you have experienced difficulty sleeping, let us know.

Adjusting Your Sleep Schedule

BSP Sept 2018 headaches

Bottom Line:

Neck and back pain are the most common reasons people experience sleep disturbances. Patients talk about sleeping on the floor, or sleeping in a lazy boy, or even sleeping bent over their bed attempting to get into a position that helps them get those few precious moments of rest and relief. Talk about a pain! All you want is the ability to get some rest, yet every position seems to make things feel worse. Well, don’t worry - you’re in the right place to get back on track!

Why it Matters:

Your body needs rest to heal. If you are in pain, it can be challenging to find a comfortable position to rest. As Chiropractors, we understand this better than anyone. Chiropractic care has been shown to increase your spinal range of motion, decrease inflammation, and even reduce the pressure on the delicate nerves exiting your spinal column - all of which will make it much easier to find a comfortable sleep position.

  • Finding a comfortable position to sleep when you’re in pain can be difficult.
  • Adjustments reduce the stress on your spine, helping you more easily find a comfortable position to sleep.
  • Sleep is essential to healing because your body is better able to accelerate the healing process when properly rested.

Next Steps:

If stress has kept you up at night, you're not alone. However, you can rest easy knowing you’re in the right place! Chiropractic adjustments can help reduce the stress in the muscles supporting your head and neck, allowing you to experience a more comfortable - and more restful - night of sleep.

The Connection Between Posture and Headaches

BSP Sept 2018 headaches

Bottom Line:

Ergonomics is the study of the posture and positioning of your body. It sounds pretty boring until you consider that millions of people are suffering from headaches every day that are related to their posture! Whether it’s an assembly line, a computer, a tablet, or your phone, you’re likely spending a lot of time looking down. Research has found that up to 20 pounds of pressure is placed on the neck for every inch the chin extends forward or down. This increased pressure can irritate the tissues of the neck leading to everything from premature degenerative changes to chronic headaches.

Why it Matters:

Maintaining a healthy posture not only helps reduce the stress and pressure on the spinal joints of your neck, it also helps dramatically reduce your headaches. The first step in regaining proper posture is to establish normal motion. This is why Chiropractic adjustments are likely to become your new best friend! Our care is focused on finding the areas of your spine that aren’t moving correctly and gently helping them regain their normal range of motion. After we’ve worked with you to restore proper movement, we can then focus on strengthening the muscles that support your neck and back. This personalized type of care is how we’ve been able to help many people (just like you!) establish better posture and reduce the frequency and severity of their headaches.

  • Every inch of forward head posture adds up to 20 lbs. of pressure on your neck.
  • This added pressure can contribute to tension headaches.
  • Research has shown that Chiropractic care can dramatically improve your posture and, in turn, reduce your headaches.

Next Steps:

Take a look around your workstation the next time you’re at the office. Is it set up in a way that's ergonomically correct? If not, or if you're not sure, just let us know! We would be happy to set up a time to come to your office, evaluate your workplace, and share our specific recommendations to help keep you and everyone you work with feeling great!

Finding Headache Relief Without Drugs

BSP AUG 2018 NECK PAIN SP-7_2

Bottom Line:

Waking up with a headache or consistently getting one by the end of work each day is not fun (or normal). Headaches can be caused by a variety of factors, none of which are a shortage of medication in your body! As a matter of fact, if you have been relying on drugs to find relief day after day, there is a variety of new research that encourages you to reconsider.

Why it Matters:

Relying on medications to find relief each and every day places an enormous amount of strain on your liver and other internal organs. What’s more, researchers have found that a common “side” effect of many popular headache mediations is…more headaches! And if that wasn’t enough to encourage you to think differently about how to treat your headaches, new research has found an increased risk of heart attacks in people who had taken NSAIDs (or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). It’s easy to see why our firm belief is that the best way for most people to find relief from their headaches is through natural healthcare such as combination of Chiropractic and light stress-relieving exercise like yoga.

  • Headache medications often have dangerous side effects.
  • Research has shown little to no evidence that such drugs are effective at treating headaches.
  • In a recent study, over 30% of participants saw a 100% improvement in the frequency and severity of their headaches after receiving Chiropractic care.

Next Steps:

We can help you discover the causes of many common types of headaches, share tips on reducing their impact in your life, and review the steps you can take to ensure that you don’t have to suffer from them in the future.

Decreasing Tension Headaches

BSP AUG 2018 NECK PAIN SP-7_2

Bottom Line:

Quick question: do you know anyone who isn’t interested in reducing the stress in their life? We’ll give you a minute. Still thinking? That’s what we thought! There aren’t too many of us who couldn’t benefit from reducing the stress in our daily lives. Between family, work, and the latest political thread on social media, the stress can be overwhelming! Chronic everyday stress can also significantly impact our brains and bodies, causing everything from fatigue and depression to debilitating headaches.

Why it Matters:

Headaches caused by stress are often classified as tension-type headaches. Pain at the base of the skull that starts in the neck and wraps around to the front of the head is common with tension headaches. Research has shown that Chiropractic adjustments effectively treat and correct the cause of these headaches, providing both relief from symptoms and lasting results. In fact, in addition to reducing tension in the muscles supporting your neck, adjustments can also improve your range of motion and reduce your overall feeling of stress. This unique combination of benefits is why millions of people rely on Chiropractic care to help them find relief.

  • Chronic stress can contribute to tension headaches.
  • Chiropractic care is one of the best ways to reduce stress on your musculoskeletal system and spine.
  • Adjustments have been shown to reduce the frequency, severity, and intensity of tension headaches.

Next Steps:

You don’t necessarily need to make drastic changes to your life to reduce your daily stress level. Picking up a new hobby, taking a few minutes to read before bed, or enjoying a relaxing activity like yoga can all help. If you or someone you know are dealing with headaches due to stress, make an appointment for an evaluation to see if Chiropractic can help!

Neck Pain, Posture, and Headaches

BSP AUG 2018 NECK PAIN SP-7_2

Bottom Line:

You know that feeling - the one where you start to feel a headache coming on. For many people, it is a daily occurrence and often begins in the neck and shoulders. That’s right - tight muscles around your neck can result in tension headaches. What’s more, if you sit at a computer all day, your posture may also be contributing to a decreased range of motion, premature degenerative changes in your spine, and headaches - but there’s good news! There are a few simple steps you can take to help you feel less pain, increase your energy, and fend off those degenerative changes. New evidence-based guidelines strongly recommend a combination of exercise, stretching, and Chiropractic adjustments to help reduce neck pain, headaches, and muscle tension.

Why it Matters:

Chronic neck pain can rob you of the things you love. Enjoying your hobbies, taking a few moments to relax, and time with your family can all be affected. However, neck pain and headaches don’t have to be a part of your daily life. By understanding the latest research, you can take massive action to improve your health. Check out the next steps below to find a few tips to help you take your life back from pain.

  • Research recommends a combination of Chiropractic, exercise, and stretching to reduce neck pain.
  • Chiropractic has an extremely high patient satisfaction score of over 90%.
  • An amazing 85% of people receiving Chiropractic adjustments for acute neck pain experienced significant improvement.

Next Steps:

It’s exciting that research has continued to showcase that you’re in charge of your health. Your habits and lifestyle can make a massive impact. Start reducing neck pain today by taking breaks every 45-60 minutes and stretching out your neck and shoulders. How Safe is Chiropractic Care

BSP AUG 2018 NECK PAIN SP-7_2

Bottom Line:

Safety first. Not only is “do no harm” part of the oath that doctors take, but it’s also a pretty good principle for all of us to live by. No matter how safe you are, there are times when you get hurt or injured, and finding a healthcare option that is safe, provides excellent results, and has high patient satisfaction can be tricky. Or is it? In 2007, SPINE (one of the worlds most respected research journals) looked at data from over 50,000 Chiropractic adjustments given to nearly 20,000 patients, and they found Chiropractic care to be incredibly safe and effective.

Why it Matters:

Awkward sleeping positions, poor posture, and long hours at a computer can all lead to neck pain. By staying active, taking periodic breaks to stretch throughout the day, and setting up your workstation to minimize the stress on your spine, you can dramatically reduce the likelihood you will encounter a bout of neck pain. It’s great to know that if you do end up experiencing neck pain, Chiropractic adjustments are one of the safest and most effective options to help get you back on track.

  • Research has shown Chiropractic care to be extremely safe.
  • SPINE examined nearly 20,000 patients and found zero complications.
  • Up to 85% of people with acute neck pain found relief with Chiropractic adjustments.

Next Steps:

Believe it or not, many people are nervous to start Chiropractic care. The truth is that Chiropractic care is safer than many medications and has far less risk than surgery. Sharing research like this with your friends and family is a great idea. It will inspire them to make a smart decision using the Research That Matters!

Your Arm Pain May be Coming from Your Neck

July-Social-Posts

Bottom Line:

Cervical radiculopathy is the medical term for when a spinal disc in your neck is irritating or compressing a nerve root, causing pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arm and hand. Specific neck movements, like twisting or bending, may increase the pain. This can happen because of injury or degenerative changes in the spine. The good news is that over 95% of people get well with natural healthcare like Chiropractic.

Why it Matters:

A pinched nerve in your neck can cause a lot of pain, and it can be tempting to reach for medications to find relief. However, research shows us you may want to contact your Chiropractor before reaching for any pills. The Annals of Internal Medicine found that Chiropractic adjustments provided more pain relief than medications for people suffering from neck pain and the relief was long-lasting. The patients in the study experienced statistically significant relief up to 1 year after the initial treatment!

  • Discs in your neck can compress or irritate your nerves causing pain, numbness, or weakness.
  • Research has shown that adjustments were more effective than medication in the short and long-term.
  • Chronic neck pain can be reduced by up to 75% or more after Chiropractic adjustments.

Next Steps:

Research has shown that Chiropractic is an extremely safe and effective healthcare option for treating neck pain or pinched nerves. Additionally, Chiropractors are trained to help you proactively combat neck pain and to prevent it from showing up in the first place. Ask us about some simple stretches and exercises you can perform to help improve your range of motion while keeping your discs and nerves healthy and happy.

Week 4 (Leg / Back)

The Low Back and Leg Connection

July-Social-Posts

Bottom Line:

Most orthopedic practices have a specialist for your foot, a specialist for your back, a specialist for your hip, and a specialist for your knee. Based on the number of specialists for your back, hip, and leg you would think these joints aren’t designed to work together. But research has shown that not only are your low back and lower extremities linked by your nervous systems, but also by bio-mechanics. When you take a step, it’s the coordination of your toes, ankles, knee, hip, pelvis and low back that help you move forward. That is why when you have an issue with any part of that biomechanical chain, it’s important to evaluate every joint independently and how it’s working with the neighboring joints.

Why it Matters:

The proper motion of these joints is crucial to their longevity. Researchers have discovered that adjustments to the hip, knee, and ankle can decrease the pain associated with osteoarthritis and degenerative changes by over 60%! We know there is a strong connection between low back and hip pain. So, if you have hip, knee, or leg pain, it's essential to also address your low back.

  • Pain in your hip, leg, or knee can stem from a problem in your low back.
  • Adjustments to your low back can improve the function of your hip and leg.
  • People with hip pain have shown improvement in pain by over 60%.

Next Steps:

Over 85% of the population with be afflicted with back pain at some point in their life. Many will also have associated leg pain or radiculopathy. If this sounds familiar, know you are in the right place. Our practice is focused on helping people find relief naturally. We use the latest evidence-informed care to ensure you can get back on your feet as soon as possible and find lasting relief!

Week 3 (Hip)

That Bad Old Hip (and What to Do About It)

July-Social-Posts

Bottom Line:

There aren’t too many daily activities that don’t require the use of your hips. The hip is a ball and socket joint that connects your legs to your pelvis. If you have been suffering from hip pain, even walking around the house can be difficult. However, is that bad old hip a result of age or joint imbalance?

Why it Matters:

Chronic hip pain has historically been treated with injections or even hip replacements. These invasive treatments have been performed tens of thousands of times per year, with mixed results. Thankfully, new research has begun to show that proper maintenance of your hips may be able to save you from the scalpel. When your low back, hips, and pelvis are balanced and have a full range of motion, your hips will have equal wear and tear, and they’re designed to last a lifetime! Researchers have found that adjustments to the low back and hips can improve hip pain by over 60% and provide a statistically significant improvement in range of motion.

  • Low impact exercise and adjustments can improve range of motion and reduce your pain.
  • Research has shown improvement in hip pain by over 60% after chiropractic adjustments.
  • Adjustments have been shown to be over 30% more effective than exercise for easing the pain of hip osteoarthritis.

Next Steps:

If you know someone who has a “hitch in their giddy-up,” send them in for a consultation where we will provide actionable health tips on how they can improve their quality of life without dangerous medications and risky surgery.

Week 2 (knee)

Reduce Knee Pain Without Drugs or Surgery

July-Social-Posts

Bottom Line:

Knee pain can be debilitating. Getting up and down stairs, long walks, and even getting around the house can be difficult when your knees hurt. The cause of knee pain is often osteoarthritis or the degenerative changes of the joint. The pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee is the number one cause of knee replacements worldwide. However, Chiropractic care may be able to help you regain mobility and get you back to performing the activities of daily living with less pain and without the need for drugs or surgery.

Why it Matters:

Inside each of your knees, you have two primary surfaces (or condyles); one on the outside (or lateral) portion of the knee and one on the inside (the medial aspect). These are meant to glide and move freely with equally balanced forces much like the tires on your car. If they are not balanced, then one side is more likely to develop degenerative changes that can lead to osteoarthritis. Chiropractic adjustments can help restore the ideal alignment and balance. This reduces the wear and tear on your knees, can help reduce pain and inflammation, and improve their overall function.

  • Osteoarthritis often causes knee pain.
  • Improper alignment can contribute to degenerative changes.
  • Adjustments have been found to improve the functional ability of the knee.

Next Steps:

Our practice has helped people just like you reduce their knee pain and get their life back! Contact us today for a consultation at no charge to see if Chiropractic been the missing link in finding relief from your knee pain.

Every Step You Take

July-Social-Posts

Bottom Line:

The average person walks over 100,000 miles in a lifetime! Every step places stress and strain on your foot and ankle. Most ankle injuries occur in the soft tissue, meaning your ligaments were stretched beyond their reasonable limits. It’s easy to suddenly twist your ankle when hiking, running, or even stepping off a curb in an awkward position. Research has estimated the re-injury rate after an ankle sprain could be as high as 80%. Thankfully, new research has also shown that adjustments can reduce your injury rate while also reducing pain and improving function.

Why it Matters:

Your foot contains 26 bones, dozens of ligaments, and more than a hundred muscles all working together through 33 joints. Also included in this complex structure are the arches of your feet. Your arches are designed to support the weight of your body when standing and disperse the forces of each step to reduce the overall wear and tear on the joints. As you can imagine, proper movement of the 33 joints in your foot is crucial to its performance.

  • Your foot is made up of 33 individual joints or articulations.
  • The re-injury rate of a sprained ankle has been estimated to be up to 80%.
  • Emerging research indicates adjustments may be able to decrease the re-injury rate while also improving function and decreasing pain.

Next Steps:

Take a look at the soles of your shoes. Is the wear pattern even? Or is one area wearing out before the rest? If the wear pattern is not even, let us know! This is a sign that your gait is not balanced and you may be placing undue stress on your foot and ankle that could cause pain in the future or predispose you to twist an ankle. We would be happy to analyze your movement and provide you with a plan to find relief.

Can Your Neck Cause Arm Pain?

May-Social-Posts

Bottom Line:

Have you ever had a “dead arm”? It’s an uncomfortable combination of pain and numbness from sitting or sleeping in an awkward position that thankfully goes away after a few minutes. If you have cervical radiculopathy, that same feeling of pain, numbness, and weakness in your arm isn’t likely to go away on its own. Intense pain, numbness, or weakness in your arm and shoulder is commonly caused by a neck injury. If a disc, bone or ligament irritates or compresses a nerve root in your neck, it can create symptoms in your arm and shoulder. The nerves that exit the spine in your neck are responsible for the sensation and strength in your arm, and when those nerves become aggravated, it can result in pain.

Why it Matters:

Cervical radiculopathy is often misdiagnosed. It would seem as though the pain in your arm would be an “arm problem,” not a neck problem. Arthritic and degenerative changes slowly change the structure of your spine. Add in any sports injuries, poor posture, and the effects of gravity, and you quickly create a situation where your biomechanics, or how you move, is less than ideal. Over time this can result in destructive changes to the bone, disc, and ligament which in turn irritate the nearby nerves. Fortunately, exciting new research has showcased that Chiropractic care may be one of the safest and most effective conservative care options to help you recover from cervical radiculopathy.

  • The nerves in your neck travel down your arm and hand to provide strength and sensation.
  • Arm and hand pain or weakness can originate from the nerves coming from your neck.
  • Research has shown Chiropractic care can provide more relief than many commonly prescribed medications and injections.

Next Steps:

The care we provide is specifically designed to help you find lasting relief and regain your quality of life. We can help you discover all the natural ways cervical radiculopathy can be prevented and treated. We look forward to helping you find an effective natural solution to your arm pain!

The Link Between Posture and Shoulder Motion

May-Social-Posts

Bottom Line:

Your shoulder is one of the most complex joints in your body. It is surrounded and supported by a complex network of nerves, tendons, muscles, and ligaments. Many of these structures tie back to your spine or mid-back and neck. Your posture, or position, directly impacts the motion of your shoulder and scapula. Long hours at a desk or computer can lead to postural changes and muscle imbalances. Poor posture and a forward head position can lead to “upper cross syndrome.” Upper cross syndrome is an imbalance of the muscles in your upper back, neck, and shoulder that can lead to neck, back, and shoulder pain with restricted range of motion.

Why it Matters:

Whether it's working at a computer, long hours in a car, or using a tablet/smartphone, just about everyone is susceptible to developing upper cross syndrome. However, you don’t need to suffer or change your career to find relief. A combination of Chiropractic adjustments, stretching, and specific postural exercises can make a huge impact on your ability to stay happy and healthy. Taking short breaks every 20-30 minutes to lightly extend your arms and move your neck through a comfortable range of motion will help your body “reset” while working. Also, periodic Chiropractic adjustments will help you maintain an optimal range of motion and reduce restrictions that can occur in your spinal joints.

  • The shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the human body.
  • Your posture greatly impacts the ability of your shoulders to move through their full range of motion.
  • It’s important to address the neck and mid-back when treating a shoulder injury.

Next Steps:

Upper cross syndrome is one of the most common conditions we see in our practice. Far too many people suffer from pain for years before discovering Chiropractic care. Millions of people end up taking medications just to get through the day. Like you, we believe there is a better way. We are excited to share how the challenges of upper cross syndrome can be overcome without drugs or surgery!

Tennis Elbow? I Haven’t Swung a Racket in Years!

May-Social-Posts

Bottom Line:

You don’t need to be John McEnroe to feel the pain of tennis elbow. Actually, 95% of people who suffer from lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, don’t even play tennis! Lateral epicondylitis is an inflammation of the tendon that attaches to the lateral epicondyle of your elbow. It can result in pain and weakness in the wrist and elbow. Repetitive motions and an awkward positioning of your wrist often contribute to tennis elbow. So how can you fix it? Keep reading…

Why it Matters:

Reducing inflammation around the tendon is an important first step. Reducing muscle spasms to improve blood flow, improve circulation and speed up recovery is also very important. After the pain has decreased, be sure to begin a combination of stretching and strengthening the muscles supporting your elbow, shoulder, and neck. Having restricted motion in your neck can predispose you to developing tennis elbow. Our team will carefully examine your neck, shoulder, elbow, and wrist to make sure the motion is natural and free of restriction.

  • Tennis elbow is inflammation of the tendon that attaches to your lateral epicondyle.
  • Overuse and repetitive motion can cause tennis elbow.
  • Postural changes, rehab, and Chiropractic care have been shown to be extremely effective at treating tennis elbow.

Next Steps:

Tennis elbow is unlikely to disappear on its own – but, by taking a conservative approach, you will be in the best possible position to find relief. Our team will help guide you through a complete plan of care to get your back in the game.  Once you are feeling better, you may even want to pick up tennis as a new sport!

You probably know someone who has undergone surgery to “correct” carpal tunnel, only to see the pain return shortly after. What you probably don’t know is that up to 75% of people who have surgery for carpal tunnel will have the pain return within two years! Surgery focuses on releasing the pressure on the median nerve, but what about all of those years of repetitive motion and stress on your elbow, shoulder, and neck? The long-term stress on all of these structures needs to be addressed as well to find lasting relief from carpal tunnel syndrome.

Why it Matters:

Many people with carpal tunnel syndrome spend hours performing a repetitive motion with their arms and hands. This also places a tremendous amount of stress on the muscles and tissues of your neck. New research has shown an extremely high correlation between wrist pain and restricted range of motion in the neck. Interestingly, more significant pain in the wrist led to a more substantial restriction in the neck. By establishing an improved range of motion in your neck, you can make a huge impact on pain in your wrist and hand!

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs due to compression on the median nerve in the wrist.
  • Surgery is not very effective at providing long term relief.
  • Your neck, shoulder, and elbow all can contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome.

Next Steps:

While many doctors focus on treating the median nerve, our practice will address the entire spectrum of issues which can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. By establishing a better range of motion in your wrist, elbow, shoulder, and neck, you will be free to move through your day with less pain. Reducing the inflammation in your soft tissues and strengthening your postural muscles will also help you find long-term relief.

Can Chiropractic Help You Lose Weight?

May-Social-Posts

Bottom Line:

If you are looking to lose a few extra pounds this month, you are not alone. Many of our patients are working towards a similar goal.

How you move, eat, and think every day will determine your success. All three are part of maintaining an active lifestyle. So where does Chiropractic fit in?

Why it Matters:

Unfortunately, no Chiropractic technique takes off 10 pounds with each adjustment; but people just like you have been able to maintain a healthy weight by adding Chiropractic care into their active lifestyle.

Research has suggested that periodic Chiropractic care can help evaluate, detect and treat emerging problems. So, by reducing injuries, you will be able to stay active and keep your exercise routine on track.

Also, many people report reduced stress after getting adjusted. This makes sense because research studies have shown reduced muscle tension in the shoulders after an adjustment.

And finally, we firmly believe that healthy food choices make a significant impact on your body’s ability to be well and stay well. Eating healthy whole foods and sometimes even using select supplements can give your body the fuel it needs to get through the day.

  • Chiropractic has been shown to reduce the stress and tension in the muscles that support your head and neck.
  • Staying active with daily exercise will help keep your muscles toned and reduce your risk of injury.

Don’t Have Enough Time to Exercise?

May-Social-Posts

Bottom Line:

You're busy and you're stressed out. Well, you're not alone.

These are two of the most common reasons people give for not exercising consistently. Ironically, these are the two exact reasons you should be exercising and moving your body!

Moving your body releases endorphins which help you feel good, relaxes your mind which reduces stress, and burns calories to keep you looking great.

Why it Matters:

Your body is meant to move. Long hours commuting in your car or sitting at a desk can place a lot of stress on your musculoskeletal system.

If your spine and core muscles are weak and unstable, then you are more likely to suffer an injury which can cause a downward spiral that impacts your relationships with food, sleep, and exercise. So taking a pro-active approach to your exercise routine is crucial to live your best life. Chiropractic adjustments are an essential part of the picture because they can help you feel good mentally and keep you moving physically.

  • Maintaining a healthy weight can decrease the risk factors for cardiovascular and heart disease.
  • Even 15 minutes of light exercise can make a difference in your overall health.
  • Exercise can help you feel good both physically and mentally.

Next Steps:

Schedule time every day to exercise. But, don’t get discouraged if you feel like you aren’t doing enough. Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Even 15 minutes of walking during your afternoon break can provide you with the health benefits you are looking for. Burning an extra hundred calories per day (which could be accomplished with 10 minutes of walking) adds up to thousands of calories each month. Continue that trend, and you will notice inches falling off your waistline before you know it!

Stress and Weight

Bottom Line:

A recent research study found over 75% of people experience at least a moderate amount of stress every day!

Chronic stress is not fun to deal with, but did you know it can also affect your weight?

When you are stressed your body goes into survival (or “fight or flight”) mode which changes your hormonal balance. You don’t need to be running from a saber tooth tiger to enter fight or flight mode. Even everyday events like traffic and stress at work can cause you to have that physiological response.

Why it Matters:

Recent research suggests that chronic stress can result in:

  • high blood pressure,
  • changes in your brain,
  • and weight gain.

When you are stressed out, it is more likely that you will over-eat and less likely that you will get enough sleep and exercise. Stress causes your body to release cortisol, a hormone that can produce a build-up of fatty tissue and cause weight gain. Cortisol increases both your appetite and the amount of fat the body stores. By recognizing your stressors, and engaging in a few simple relaxation techniques, you can learn to reduce your body’s natural stress response.

  • The hormone Cortisol is released in response to stress and increases your blood sugar.
  • Chronic stress can lead to elevated cortisol levels.
  • An association has been found between increased cortisol levels and obesity.

Next Steps:

Relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or even simple breathing exercises can help your body counter the stress response. Also, exercise has been shown to decrease stress levels substantially.

The next time you are feeling stressed out, take a moment to breathe a few deep breaths and try to get some exercise into your schedule that day. Not only will you feel better mentally, but your body will be able to reduce the amount of Cortisol produced which will limit your body’s fat storage and help curb any thoughts of over-eating. Staying fit and trim does start in your head!

Sugar: The Beach Body Killer

Bottom Line:

If you have a sweet tooth, you know it can be difficult to avoid sugary foods like pastries, candy, or even soda. Which sugary food is your weakness?
Researchers have proven that sugar is a key contributor to weight gain. But how?
Well, sugar is made up of two molecules: glucose and fructose. Glucose is what your body uses for energy. Fructose, on the other hand, is a molecule that your liver turns to fat and is a key contributor to weight gain and disease.

Why it Matters:

When you eat a lot of sugar, it causes your blood glucose to rise, which can be toxic. So your body produces insulin to get the glucose out of your blood and into the cells to be used for energy. Over time, your body can actually build a resistance to insulin which means that your pancreas works harder to create the same balance. When the resistance to insulin reaches a critical point, it can result in type II diabetes. But first, your body begins storing an overabundance of fat in your fat cells. The worst part? Not only do you start “gaining weight” but your body has a tough time getting the energy out of the fat cells, which means your brain thinks you are hungry, and you eat even more. What a vicious cycle!

  • Excess sugar can lead to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and weight gain.
  • Eating sugary foods can result in your body storing away more fat.
  • Sugar can trick your brain into thinking it’s still hungry (even after you’ve eaten a full meal).

Next Steps:

Staying fit and healthy can be challenging, but we’re here for you. How you choose to eat is one of the most important aspects of living a healthy life. When you make good choices about how you eat, how you move, and how you think - you are set up for a healthy life.

Adjust Your Thoughts About Seasonal Allergies

Bottom Line:

For many people, the start of spring brings thoughts of blooming flowers and more time spent outdoors. For others, the first thought is whether or not they have enough tissues for their runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing fits. Seasonal allergies in the spring can put a serious damper on your mood and ability to get outside and seize the day. Staying active with exercise and avoiding foods that make your allergies worse are a few great ways to feel more like yourself this spring. But, did you know emerging research hints that getting adjusted may also be a secret weapon in your fight against allergies?

Why it Matters:

Allergies and allergic reactions are regulated by your nervous system. When your nervous system is stressed; it is more likely to overreact to its environment. The result? You guessed it…worsening allergies. Your nervous system has a close connection with your spine. In fact, emerging research has found a relationship between spinal misalignments and allergies. When these spinal misalignments were corrected, many patients in the study had a reduction of their allergies! We have heard from quite a few of our patients that their allergies improved after starting to receive chiropractic care. Have you experienced any improvement yet?

  • Researchers have found misalignments of the bones in the mid-back correlate with allergies
  • Medications such as corticosteroids and antihistamines can worsen allergies long-term
  • Many people report improvement in their allergies after getting adjusted

Next Steps:

If you suffer from worsening allergies every spring, getting adjusted may help improve your quality of life. Medications often end up triggering a host of aggravating side-effects, making them difficult, if not impossible to take. So stay well naturally! If you have been under chiropractic care and have experienced an improvement in your allergies- let us know. We would love to hear your story today.

Stressed Out and Sneezing

Bottom Line:

Research has shown that high levels of stress can cause your allergies to become worse. Mental stress can upset the balance of your nervous system and immune system. If your nervous system is overstimulated with stress, it can affect the response of your immune system to an allergen. By decreasing mental stress, your immune system can function better and head off many allergies at the pass.

Why it Matters:

Exciting new research has showcased how stress reduction can reduce the symptoms we associate with seasonal allergies. Meditation and chiropractic adjustments have been shown to reduce stress levels. And with reduced stress levels, your immune system has the potential to function at a higher level. Feeling more relaxed is something all of us could benefit from- and it may even help reduce your seasonal allergies.

  • Physical, chemical, and emotional stress can cause your immune system to become hypersensitive
  • A hypersensitive immune system often overreacts to a potential threat resulting in worsening allergies
  • Reduce stress, and allergies, with a stress-reducing activity like exercise, meditation, or even getting adjusted!

Next Steps:

Aside from putting you in a bad mood, being over-stressed has far-reaching effects on your body. If you “start to feel your allergies coming on” find stress-reducing activities that you enjoy. It may be reading a book, meditating, getting a massage, or perhaps even getting a chiropractic adjustment. Feeling better mentally and reducing your seasonal allergies are just a few of the benefits you can expect by lowering your stress levels!

Sugar is Fuel for Allergies

Bottom Line: Seasonal allergies- the runny nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing- are never fun. You may not realize the foods you eat can make your allergies worse. Certain foods can contribute to overstimulation of your immune system, activating your allergies.  Small amounts of pollen on your fruits and vegetables can initiate an allergic reaction. So be sure to thoroughly wash your produce before eating to reduce the amount of pollen and bacteria present on their outer layers. But, perhaps the worst trigger for allergies is good ol’ fashioned refined sugar. So, contrary to popular opinion, your allergies do NOT have a sweet tooth!

Why it Matters: Refined sugar causes inflammation and stresses your immune system. When your immune system is stressed, your allergies get worse. Talk about a catch 22! When you are suffering from a runny nose, itchy eyes and constant sneezing it is enticing to reach for a cookie or pastry. But that cookie may put you in a downward spiral of worsening allergies. Refined sugar raises your insulin levels and then causes your blood sugar to plummet. The spike in blood sugar is stressful to your body and can severely impact your immune systems’ ability to fight off allergens appropriately. And a stressed immune system is never able to function at its highest level.

- Refined sugar causes inflammation in your body and can crash your blood sugar levels
- Sugary foods put stress on your body and immune system
- Reducing refined sugar in your diet can help reduce your seasonal allergies

Next Steps: Avoiding excess refined sugar is a great way to reduce your allergies. The next time you feel your allergies coming on, recognize it’s a body signal that your immune system is stressed out. Try avoiding sugary snacks for a few days and give your body a chance to get well. Also, if you know someone who has been suffering from allergies and has “tried everything” to get well, share this information with them. It may help them feel better than ever this spring!

Science Source: 7 Foods That Can Help Fight Seasonal Allergies. Prevention 2017.

What are Allergies?

The spring season not only starts to bring warm weather- but for over 20% of people, it also brings allergies! Are allergies a sign of a weak immune system? No quite the opposite. Allergies are a common overreaction of the immune system to a natural product. Every day you come into contact with dust, mold, or pollen. Allergies occur if your body and immune system overreact and over produce antibodies to attack the material. This overreaction of the immune system is what we call allergies. The sneezing, wheezing, itching, runny nose, and watery eyes are all signs that your immune system has overreacted to a perceived threat.

Why it Matters: When your immune system is working correctly, it should react appropriately to the dust, mold, or pollen. Each day we all encounter millions of potential allergens. The handles on the door to your office, your countertops, your keychain- the list goes on and on. Most of the time your immune system coordinates the response to these allergens, and you move along in your day not aware that your immune system is taking care of business. It is only when your immune system overreacts and creates a body signal, such as a runny nose or itchy eyes, do you stop and take notice.

- Allergies are the body signal of an overactive immune system
- Sneezing, watery eyes, headaches, and red eyes are frequent symptoms associated with seasonal allergies
- Reducing stress through exercise, diet, and adjustments has the potential to improve your seasonal allergies

Next Steps: It’s not possible (or healthy) to avoid all forms of allergens and besides- that would be no fun! Just like muscles, your immune system gets stronger as it's challenged. Help your immune system stay as strong and balanced as possible by reducing stress, daily exercise, getting adjusted, and eating right!

Evidence-Based Solutions for Back Pain

Bottom Line: So you’ve got back pain. It’s altered your life, changed your daily activities, curbed your exercise, and maybe even made you a bit irritable. Now what? Well, it's important to know you’re not alone. Nearly everyone will experience back pain at some point in their life. Thankfully we have a method of care to help you get back on your feet without the risks associated with medications and surgery. Chiropractic!  Research has shown that adjustments help over 90% of people recover from back pain.

Why it Matters: Recovering from a back injury can be mentally tough. Many of us don’t realize what we take for granted until an injury alters our perspective. But with the correct evidence-based care, you will be back and better than ever in no time. Over the past few years, there have been considerable advancements in our understanding of the best treatments for back pain. Here are a few of the latest research updates:

- Adjustments have been shown to be more effective at reducing pain than many commonly prescribed medications
- Chiropractic adjustments provided more patients with relief than spinal injections; showed a recent study from JMPT
- Researchers found patients had just as much relief with chiropractic adjustments as they did with surgery

Next Steps: When recovering from a back injury it’s important to keep a positive attitude, stick with your care plan, and avoid “pushing” through the pain. Your body is designed to heal naturally, without the need for drugs and surgery. Our chiropractic team will work with your body’s natural healing instinct to create a specific care plan and help you get your life back.

How Sitting Can Ruin Your Back

Bottom Line: Our bodies are designed to move! Many of us however, are trapped commuting to work or spending long hours at a desk staring at a computer screen. For all of the advantages of the modern world, we have noticed an increase in sedentary tendencies.  Shockingly, this mostly sedentary lifestyle has been linked to a vast array of disease. Researchers have found too much sitting each day is as dangerous as smoking! Yes, it’s true. Too much time sitting may be one of our most challenging health epidemics.

Why it Matters: Long hours of sitting each day wreak havoc on the muscles and support system of your low back. The deep stabilizing muscles of your low back atrophy and your hamstrings shorten, or become tight. When your spine doesn’t have strong stabilizing muscles, you are more likely to have an injury. After an injury, many of us slow down our activity even more. It’s a vicious cycle! But, you have the power to stop this cycle with a combination of chiropractic care and exercise. Here are a few pointers:

- Too much sitting is now considered as dangerous as smoking
- Our bodies are designed to move
- Sedentary lifestyles can lead to a vast array of diseases, but exercise and chiropractic can halt many of these challenges

Next Steps: Considering the dangers of too much sitting, you should take every opportunity you can to stay active throughout the day. Standing desks are a fantastic way to change positions and keep your back healthy while still getting work done on the computer. Also, taking short breaks each hour to stretch or walk around the office is a great way to increase your energy level and engage the muscles supporting your low back. If you're technologically savvy, there are even wearable devices available you can program to give you a small vibration as a reminder that it’s time to stand up and to get moving!

Bad Disc Slowing You Down?

Bottom Line: Spinal discs play an essential role in your low back, acting as small shock absorbers and giving you the ability to move in many different directions. Your discs are comprised of two major parts- an outer ring of cartilage which provides support and a jelly-like center that facilities motion. As age and injuries catch up with us, the disc can herniate. A herniated disc is when the middle (the jelly) of the disc breaks through the outer wall irritating a spinal nerve and causing severe pain in your back or leg. Researchers have found this most often occurs between the ages of 35-50.

Why it Matters: Almost everyone knows someone who has suffered from pain caused by a herniated, slipped, or bulging disc. The pain can be so intense that many people think surgery is the only way to correct it. Well, we have good news. Research has shown people who choose chiropractic adjustments had the same amount of relief as those who chose surgery! And what about those medications that mask the pain but fail to correct the problem? Well, research has shown chiropractic adjustment to be significantly better than many of the common drugs prescribed for back pain.  Here are some take away points:

- Top-research journal, SPINE, has recommended the use of adjustments for back pain
- Adjustments were shown to provide significantly more relief than medications
- Adjustments have been shown to be just as effective as surgery for taking care of herniated discs

Next Steps: Your spinal discs stay healthy by having strong muscular support and a full range of motion. Keep your spine stabilizing muscles healthy by committing to daily exercise. And what about maintaining a full range of motion? It’s easy! Chiropractic adjustments gently and effectively help restore proper range of motion in your neck, mid-back, and low back.  When your spine is moving well with appropriate support- you are going to be feeling great!

Back Facts to Keep You Active

Bottom Line: Nothing can slow you down faster than a bad back. It can be difficult to exercise, play sports, or even get to the grocery store when your back hurts. Age, lack of exercise, excess weight, improper lifting, and too many hours sitting can all result in low back pain. Research has shown that over 80% of people will experience back pain at some point in their life. The good news is that researchers have also found that chiropractic care can not only help get you back on track after an injury, but could also help prevent future episodes of low back pain from occurring.

Why it Matters: Your spine is a marvel of engineering and design. Curves in your neck, mid-back, and low back distribute the load of gravity just like Roman architecture. The spinal discs act as a natural shock absorption system that is both strong and flexible. And winding its way through it all is our spinal cord and nerve roots- the magnificent communication system within our body. Keeping your back healthy is much more important than just avoiding aches and pains. A stable and supported back is essential to maintaining a high quality of life. Here are a few take away points:

- The nervous system is protected and housed within your spinal column as it travels to and from your brain to body
- Back pain is often caused by the muscles or discs of the spine
- Chiropractic care has been shown to help over 90% of people find relief from back pain while also providing a statistically significant improvement in function

Next Steps: Doctors can assess the “health” of your spine through x-ray and a physical exam looking at range of motion, strength, and posture. By periodically checking your spine, we can help you take a pro-active approach to your spinal health. Research has shown that maintenance chiropractic care can help evaluate, detect, and prevent future episodes of low back pain. And, as you now know, spinal health is directly associated with living your best life!

Staying Well with Chiropractic Care

Bottom Line: Back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Maybe that’s how you discovered chiropractic care. The research supporting chiropractic adjustments as the top choice to reduce pain and increase function for those body signals is overwhelming. But, what’s even more exciting is the research showcasing how chiropractic adjustments may be able to do much more. Emerging research has begun to show that chiropractic care can impact your immune system, helping it function at a higher level.  In other words, chiropractic care may not only be able to help you get well, but it also may be able to help you stay well!

Why it Matters: Recent research has shown that chiropractic adjustments can reduce the production of inflammatory mediators. With less inflammatory mediators you feel better, with less pain. Why does it matter? Well, inflammation, and the creation of inflammatory mediators is part of your immune system.  The autonomic nervous system is made up of two divisions- the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. The parasympathetic nervous system is in charge of rest and recovery. Your sympathetic nervous system is responsible for the fight or flight response. When your sympathetic nervous system is activated, your immune system isn’t able to rest and recover very well. Recently, new research indicated that chiropractic adjustments can reduce sympathetic nerve activity. When your stress response is lowered, your immune system can better fight off sickness.

- Adjustments can reduce inflammatory mediators, which can provide pain relief
- Research has shown adjustments to decrease our sympathetic nerve activity
- Relaxation of neck tension after an adjustment is common, helping you feel better

Next Steps: Many people start chiropractic care to get their life back from pain. But, preliminary research has shown that adjustments may have an impact on your immune function as well. Patients frequently tell us that since the start of their chiropractic care they get sick less often, and it looks as though the research is starting to prove it. If you have a friend or loved one who seems to get sick quite often, take this study and share it with them. It may be their first step towards a healthier immune system!

Move Your Way to a Better Immune System

better immune system

Bottom Line:

The simplest way to boost your immunity? Exercise! Fortunately, you don’t need to be a marathon runner to take advantage of the benefits of exercise. By taking a daily walk or following a simple exercise routine, you can feel better, more energized, and strengthen your immune system. If you work at a desk, it can be a little more challenging to stay active during the day. Use a standing desk or take a brisk walk during your lunch break to stay healthier and feel more energized throughout the day.

Why it Matters:

Exercise and movement can increase our immunity in many different ways. First, when we exercise, blood pumps through our body at a rapid rate. This helps white blood cells be absorbed into our body tissues more rapidly. White blood cells are an essential part of our immune system that fights disease. Also, exercising can reduce our stress hormones and stimulate the release of endorphins- helping you feel great! Finally, when we exercise and break a sweat, our body temperature rises. The increase in our body temperature can help fight infection and prevent bacteria from growing, similar to how a fever works.

  • Exercise helps white blood cells circulate more rapidly to fight illness
  • Movement of our body slows down the release of stress hormones
  • Our body temperature rises during exercise which can help prevent bacteria from growing and fight infection

Next Steps:

It’s stressful to be sick. So we encourage you to be proactive. By simply taking a walk during your lunch break, you can start preventing illness while strengthening your immune system. What’s even more exciting? A recent health survey found over 60% of the participants reported fewer colds since they began their exercise routine. Now that’s what I call a smart decision for your health.

Getting sick is…normal?

heaache

Bottom Line:

Believe it or not, getting sick is a body signal that your immune system is working! Yes, you read that correctly. Every single day you encounter bacteria that could make you sick. Fortunately, when you come into contact with these germs, your immune system kicks in and starts fighting them off without you ever knowing. On rare occasions, when your immune system isn’t functioning at 100%, your body will give you a signal- like a fever or a runny nose, that sickness may be on the way. But, what if there was research showcasing how you could make a few simple changes and not only decrease your likelihood of getting sick, but also strengthen your immune system?

Why it Matters:

You probably know someone who almost never gets sick. Are they built with a superhuman immune system? Probably not. Most people who rarely get sick are taking pro-active steps to keep their immune system in tip-top shape. And when your immune system is functioning correctly- it can fight off almost anything that it comes in contact with. By making smart choices with your diet, staying active, and getting enough rest, you can ensure your immune system remains strong. Also, emerging research has shown that chiropractic adjustments can also improve our ability to stay well!

  • Eat a healthy diet of vegetables and lean meats to boost your immune system
  • Exercise daily to help your body (and mind) stay strong
  • Stay adjusted to decrease stress and improve your overall well-being

Next Steps:

February is the perfect time of year to take a few action steps and boost your immune system. A robust immune system will help you stay healthy and active, enjoying the things you love with the people you love.

Foods to Fight Colds

heaache

Snowstorms, wind that cuts right through your coat, and a lack of available sunlight. Ah, the joys of winter! For many of us, winter means more time indoors, and a higher likelihood that we circulate germs that could cause us to become sick. When your ill, food is the last thing on your mind. Everything seems unappetizing when your nose is clogged, and you can’t taste a thing. But, by making healthy food choices, you can become stronger and speed up your recovery. Also, by maintaining a healthy diet, you can strengthen your immune system and perhaps even get sick less often.

Why it Matters:

You’ve heard it before, but it’s true. Food is the fuel for your body. So give your digestive system a break and be sure to eat easily digestible, nutrition-dense foods. It will help your immune system stay strong. Here are a few ideas to get started.

  • Bone broth contains minerals that can boost your immune system
  • Probiotics found in yogurt can improve your sleep, digestion, and immunity
  • Lean meats, especially those with omega-3 fatty acids, can reduce inflammation

Next Steps:

A little planning can go a long way. Most of the time, we make poor choices when we are in a rush, or unprepared. And this often results in stopping by a restaurant or taking out food on the run. Create a simple calendar highlighting your meals for the week. Healthy home-cooked meals will not only strengthen your immune system, but it can also help you save money!

Start off this year with an Energy Boost

heaache

Bottom Line:

Getting enough sleep can be difficult around the holidays. Well, let’s get real- many of us don’t have the best sleeping patterns to begin with, and the holidays can make it even more challenging. And when we don’t get enough sleep it can result in fatigue, difficulty making decisions, and even illness. But, by staying well adjusted and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, you can keep your energy up and reduce your chance of getting sick.

Why it Matters:

Did you know that your sleep patterns directly contribute to your overall energy levels? It’s true. Sleep plays a significant role in your overall health. Chronic sleep deficiency has been linked to obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue syndrome, and more. While you are sleeping, your brain and central nervous system are hard at work preparing you for the next day. Believe it or not, sleep is also essential to your immune system. A lack of sleep has been shown to decrease your immune system’s ability to fight common infections. The good news is that getting 7-8 hours per night will allow your body to feel and function better.

  • Getting enough sleep will help you feel more energized with less fatigue
  • Lack of sleep has been linked to obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, and more
  • Maintaining a consistent 7-8 of sleep can reduce your likelihood of getting sick

Next Steps:

Reading a few pages of a book, or listening to some calm music before bed can help slow your mind down and prepare it for a good night's sleep. If muscle tension, spasms, or pain are keeping you up at night, please let us know. We would be honored to create a specific care plan to help you get more rest and recovery. Start your new year right by staying healthy and active!

Recover from Your Holiday Hangover

heaache

Bottom Line:

Prolonged stress, long travel and maybe just one too many fruitcakes can all contribute to the dreaded holiday hangover. Well, with the New Year comes a new opportunity to get healthier, lose those extra pounds, and overcome the holiday hangover. How we eat plays a huge role in our weight and our energy levels. When you have a low energy level, it’s difficult to get the motivation to stay active and exercise. However, when you give your body the proper nutrition, you can have more energy, lose more weight, and stay more active. So instead of focusing on the foods, you shouldn’t eat, let’s highlight a few foods and supplements that can help you stay active, energize, and get ready to shed those pounds.

Why it Matters:

For healthy foods to give you an energy boost, it’s all about eating the right ones at the right time. Eating small meals and snacking throughout the day is a great way to keep your body fueled and your energy levels high.

  • Here are a few high energy foods (without that sugar crash): blueberries, strawberries, salmon, lean meats, nuts, whole grains, vegetables
  • Supplements such as fish oil and probiotics can help you reduce inflammation and keep your gut healthy and happy

Next Steps:

Start by eating a few small meals per day and snacking every few hours in-between. This will help keep your energy up throughout the day. You’ll feel better, think better, and be more motivated to stick with your exercise routine. The New Year is a great time to improve your health, get a little extra motivation and even lose a few pounds in the process!

How to Reduce Stress in the New Year

heaache

Bottom Line:

Are you overwhelmed by stress? Well, you're not alone. Studies show over 54% of people are concerned with the amount of stress in their daily life. Many of us carry this stress in our shoulders and neck. Muscle tension in our shoulders can contribute to headaches, neck and back pain. Chronic stress can lower your energy levels resulting in irritability, illness, and even depression. But, there is good news! A few simple changes to your daily routine can help you dramatically decrease your stress level, boost your energy, and ultimately live a healthier and happier life. Keep reading to learn how.

Why it Matters:

One of the best ways you can increase your energy levels and reduce stress is with motion! Our bodies are built to move. Improving spinal motion or segmental motion is one of the ways that chiropractic adjustments help you move and feel better. Research has shown that chiropractic adjustments can significantly reduce muscle tension in the shoulders, helping reduce pain, improve range of motion, and decrease stress!

“...cervical muscle tension was significantly reduced bilaterally after (an adjustment).”

“...we observed metabolic changes in the brain and skeletal muscles, as well as reductions in subjective pain, muscle tension… (after a chiropractic adjustment)”

Next Steps:

If you know someone who gets sick around the holidays it is likely due to stress. Show them you care and share this research with them. These simple tips for reducing stress will help them have a happier and healthier holiday season!

A New Years Resolution: Feel More Energized!

heaache

Bottom Line:

The best way to feel more energized? Stay active! Top research journals have shown that moderate exercise can increase your energy. A simple 10-15 minute walk can get your blood pumping and increase the oxygen coming into your body, helping you feel more energized and maybe even helping you shed a few extra pounds.

Why it Matters:

Moderate exercise can help you feel energized by releasing endorphins, which make you feel happier, while contributing to a better quality of sleep. Additionally, exercise helps train the heart to work more efficiently. Ultimately, your immune system will also function better with consistent exercise. In other words, exercise can not only help you feel more energized, but it can reduce your likelihood of getting sick. And combining a moderate exercise routine with chiropractic care may be one of the best ways to stay healthy and energized all year long.

  • Exercise releases endorphins which make us feel more energized and happier
  • A simple 10-15 minute walk per day can improve your energy level by over 20%
  • Regular exercise can help you sleep better and reduce your risk of getting sick

Next Steps:

Start with a simple calendar. Schedule at least three days per week that you can take a 10-15 minute walk. By putting the activity on your schedule, it's more likely that you will follow through. Also, ask us about how chiropractic care may be able to keep you pain-free and on track with your exercise goals. We want to partner with you to make this year your healthiest and happiest year ever!

Will surgery fix my bad back?

heaache

We all know someone who has gone through a spine surgery and has just never been the same. Unfortunately, many people go into surgery hoping it will fix their problem, only to come out the same or worse than they began. Some even go through multiple surgeries on a constant hunt to get back their quality of life. Are risky and expensive surgeries the best way to improve your quality of life when you have a disc herniation? We don’t think so. Let’s take a look at the latest research.

Why it Matters:

What if you discovered that research has shown chiropractic care to give the same results as surgery for people with disc herniations? It’s true. Adjustments have been shown to provide just as much improvement as surgery, without any of the risk.

  • Most of the patients who were considered surgical candidates for a disc herniation improved with chiropractic care to the same degree as those who had undergone surgery.
  • 60% of people with sciatica improved with chiropractic adjustments just as much as they improved with surgery

Next Steps:

Surgery is always the last resort, never the first option. Our bodies are designed to heal, even from disc herniations. Natural, conservative health care works with your body to improve your quality of life and get rid of your pain. We love sharing the true message of health with our community. Can Chiropractic care correct my neck problem?

heaache

Bottom Line:

Aging, injuries, and the effects of gravity. They all lead to degenerative changes of your spine and body. You may be surprised to learn that even conditions like disc herniations can be a normal part of the aging process. So how do you slow down father time and move on from those pesky aches and pains as you get older?

Well, it’s not with any magic pills or risky surgeries. Your body is actually designed to move and be healthy. And by staying active, eating right, and making smart decisions with chiropractic care you can maintain a high quality of life well into your golden years. And what about those disc bulges and disc herniations? Keep reading…

Why it Matters:

No one likes give up their hobbies and interests due to pain. Some people just think it’s part of ‘getting older”, but I have seen 70 and 80 year olds still surfing, golfing, and doing yoga everyday. How do they stay so active, when others are debilitated by conditions like disc herniations? The answer may surprise you. Remember your body is designed to be healthy, sometimes it may just need a little help.

  • Chiropractic care provided just as much improvement as surgery for disc herniations
  • Adjustments provided MORE pain relief than injections

Millions of people are staying active late in their life by using chiropractic care. Not only do chiropractic adjustments help you reduce pain, but they also have the potential to slow down the degenerative process of the spine, effectively slowing down father time. Now that’s what I call smart healthcare.

Next Steps:

Get well and stay well by taking a proactive stance with your healthcare. Eating right, having fun, staying fit, and getting adjusted are all things you can do now to slow down the degenerative process of aging. And while we may never be able to fully reverse the aging process, we can make smart decisions to improve our quality of life and enjoy the time we have to its top potential!

Can Chiropractic care correct my neck problem?

heaache

Bottom Line:  Disc bulging (and herniations) are a natural part of the aging process. Yes, that’s right. As gravity pulls us down, we continue to age, and injuries catch up to us- our body starts to wear down and degenerative processes start. As a matter of fact, degeneration of the spine begins when we are about 30 years old!  If you have had an MRI of your spine, you may have hit the floor when looking at the report. It can be scary when you see multiple levels of your spine have disc bulges, degenerative changes, and herniations. Well, don’t despair, just because multiple levels of your spine are “not perfect”, doesn’t mean that they all are causing pain. And research shows us that you are in the right place.

Why it Matters: If you are suffering from a disc bulge or herniation that is causing pain, adjustments may be just what the doctor ordered. Here are a few quick facts you should know: Over 90% of people with disc herniations were “better” or “much better” with chiropractic care. Within just two weeks, over 55% of people had significant improvement!

Next Steps: Sharing is one of the best ways to show you care for your friends and family. Take this information and share it with a friend or family member who recently had an MRI of their spine. They may be scared and unsure of what to do next. But, once they are able to understand their condition, and that conservative care is their best option, they will be able to make a smart decision about their health!

Can Chiropractic care correct my neck problem?

heaache

Bottom Line: Have you ever had neck pain that slowed you down and kept you from doing the things you love? If so, you’re not alone. Millions of people every year suffer from neck and arm pain caused by a disc herniation. The good news is that you don’t have to rely on medications, injections, or surgeries to get back your quality of life. New scientific research has actually shown HUGE improvements with natural, conservative health care. And, the more you know, the smarter you can be with your healthcare choices.

Why it Matters: Our bodies are designed to heal. But sometimes they need a little help. Medications and injections tend to mask the problem and often have a lot of dangerous side effects. Well, you should be happy to know that chiropractic adjustments not only help provide fantastic pain relief, but they also help correct the underlying problem, helping you find long term relief.

  • at 2 weeks over 55% of people were significantly improved!
  • at 3 months over 75% of people were improved!

Next Steps: Sitting at a desk, awkward sleeping positions, and just plain getting older can all contribute to neck pain and disc problems. Maintaining an active lifestyle by eating right, exercising, and getting periodic chiropractic care can help your body fend off these degenerative processes. Ask the doctor today about how they maintain a healthy lifestyle using chiropractic care. Learning how to stay happy and healthy, that’s what I call a smart decision.

Your pain is your friend.

heaache

Bottom Line: Pain is your body's way of signaling to you that something needs your attention. Think of it as your body saying ‘Pay Attention Inside Now.’ When a problem occurs in our body, due to ergonomic stress, spinal misalignment, or degenerative changes, our body uses pain as a signal for us to pay attention and take action.

But, when the pain goes away, isn’t the problem corrected?

You may be surprised but the answer is ‘no.’ Just because your pain goes away doesn’t mean the problem has been corrected. Pain is like a bad party guest- it’s the last to show up and the first to leave.

Chiropractic adjustments work to provide pain relief while also correcting the underlying problem.

Why it Matters: You or someone you know may have visited a medical doctor in the past with neck or back pain. Perhaps, an injection was recommended. What happened next? For many people their pain returns in a matter of days or weeks. Why? Because the cause of the pain wasn’t corrected.

How can you correct the underlying problem that’s causing your pain?

If you’re receiving chiropractic adjustments as part of your care, then you already know the answer. Research has proven the smart choice. Chiropractic care has been shown to address the mechanical and neural aspects of the underlying cause of the pain. The latest research shows that people who receive chiropractic care have a 60% decrease in pain, which was nearly 10% MORE relief that those who received an injection. Congratulations… you’re on the pathway to receiving excellent pain relief while also correcting its cause- all with a chiropractic adjustment.

Next Steps: If you, or someone you know is persuaded into receiving an epidural injection, make sure to remember that the science says a combined approach of ongoing chiropractic adjustments will results in a greater outcome than an injection alone.

Getting Adjusted Makes You Stronger

heaache

Bottom Line: Did you know that a chiropractic adjustment doesn’t just help reduce your pain levels it actually helps you get stronger? It’s true. Researchers measured the electrical activity in the arms and legs before, during and after a chiropractic adjustment. What did they find? An increase in cortical drive post chiropractic adjustment. That’s science-speak for more strength.

A combination of strength and flexibility will help keep you active and pain-free.

Why it Matters: Stronger is Better… better stamina, better balance, better coordination, better performance in every area of your life. What will you do with more strength?

Next Steps: Pay attention. That’s right, consider being more mindful of where having more strength can be more positive in your life.

Kids + Care = Better Sports Performance

heaache

Bottom Line: We love our kids and always encourage them to be their very best. Well, if your children get adjusted, science now says your kids are getting physically stronger. When it comes to kids and sports, stronger often means better...

Why it Matters: We’re not talking stronger like winning the local bench press competition, we’re talking stronger as in being able to run faster, jump higher, swing harder, twist, push and pull more than ever. More strength means more performance and less physical injury.

Kids, sports, and chiropractic care. A perfect team.

Next Steps: Share the love. Now that you know our care is for more than just headaches, neck and back pain, you can know you’re making a smart decision to bring your kids in to see if we can help them perform their very best.

Poor Posture Got You Down? Stand Tall For More Energy.

heaache

Bottom Line: When we’re tired we slouch forward, however new research says that slouching makes us tired and spinal movement gives us more energy. Think of your spinal motion as your brain’s power generator giving you greater energy and clarity. Yes, just by moving your spine you can energize your brain and central nervous system.

Take a stand against poor posture and fatigue

Why it Matters: Research tells us that a chiropractic adjustment can provide your brain a natural “boost”. This is exciting, we know chiropractic care reduces pain and makes you feel better, but now we know it also provides a boost of energy. If you’re looking for more than another cup of coffee or shot of energy, great adjustments help you break the vicious cycle!

Next Steps: Health is not a result of how you feel; it’s a byproduct of how you function. Keeping your spine moving and brain functioning at its maximum capacity has been one of the best kept secrets to getting well and staying well naturally. Stay consistent with your care to stay consistent with your health.

More people find relief with chiropractic than standard medical care alone

heaache

Bottom Line: For years, progressive doctors have been fighting to effect one of the worst epidemics ever: addiction to prescription pain medications. But, thanks to a pharmaceutical industry that has billions of dollars to spend on lobbying and advertising, it's been an uphill battle. In the United States alone, over 300 million prescriptions for pain relievers are filled each year. The reason? Until recently, prescribing pills has been the standard medical care for acute pain and that’s why we have so many people addicted to painkillers. It’s estimated that 2% of the population will eventually become addicted to these prescription painkillers.

Why it Matters: New research shows that when chiropractic care is added to “standard medical care” over 73% of people have significant improvement or complete relief!

And, when people focus on correcting the cause of the problem and experience relief naturally they don’t need to keep taking a higher and higher dose of medication to reduce their pain. This is why many healthcare organizations have started to look towards chiropractic care as a huge ally in the fight against prescription medication abuse and addiction.

Next Steps: If you are have low back pain, this is the right place for you. Science says so. We appreciate you sharing this information with a friend who is sick and tired of taking medications to make it through their day.

Do you realize how smart you are?

heaache

Bottom Line: In a world of dangerous medications, risky surgeries, and the cost of healthcare being the number one cause of personal bankruptcy, doing what you can to get well soon and stay well for as long as you can is what can we say, simply genius.

Many of the most respected healthcare organizations in the world recommend chiropractic care as the best, natural way to stay pain free; but recent research from the top tier research journal SPINE has proven chiropractic to have “statistically and clinically significant” benefits (which is research-talk for the fact that chiropractic care REALLY helps people).

Why it Matters: By choosing chiropractic care you have improved your chances of finding relief by over 70%! When someone only utilizes “standard medical care” for acute low back pain, they have about a 17% chance of having moderate improvement or complete recovery. But, when you add chiropractic adjustments the percentage of people who found moderate or complete relief was 73%.

Adjustments can help “gate” or reduce pain by affecting specific nerve pathways in your nervous system. When a chiropractic adjustment is given, the body often turns off the pain signals that go to the brain. Not only that, but chiropractic adjustments can also improve our overall function ability. That means you can do more of what you love with less pain.

Adjustments can help you do more of what you love.

Next Steps: Whether you are a young mom on the go, a senior enjoying a few rounds of golf every couple days, or a road warrior traversing the skies for business; you require a natural way to stay active and healthy. This study gives you the ability to share with others that standard medical care AND chiropractic care is both smart and scientific.

Is This The Beginning of a New Trend?

heaache

Bottom Line: A recent scientific study demonstrated that 73% of the people experiencing acute low back pain and used both standard medical care AND recommended chiropractic care experienced either significant improvement or complete relief vs. 17% of people who just used standard medical care. That’s a remarkable discovery.

This might just be the beginning of a new trend in science focusing on how to help people get well and stay well naturally through methods like pro-active chiropractic care along with standard medical care. Might we soon discover a wide range of possible health concerns that people could experience significant improvement or complete relief from?

Why it Matters: In the day and age where medical debt is the number one cause of personal bankruptcy, any advantage you can give yourself to get well and stay well naturally is of huge benefit to you and your family. That’s our goal for you and why we share the latest science and research that we believe should matter to you.

Why do people experience significantly better results when adjustments are added? Well, chiropractic adjustments focus on correcting the cause of your pain or problem versus just medicating the symptom away. The objective is to find and correct the reason you’re experiencing your problem versus just tricking your body to not be inconvenienced by the signal your body is giving you that something might be wrong inside. Chiropractors believe that pain means to pay attention inside now.

Want to stay active? Put the odds in your favor.

Next Steps: Staying active into your 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s is a very realistic goal. But, to do so you need to pro-actively take care of yourself especially your spine and brain. Maintaining flexibility and a full range of motion is key to maintaining proper spinal hygiene. Together, our care along with your dedication to stretching and exercising is a formula for long-term health and longer-lasting results.

Research: Gravity goes to prison

heaache

Bottom Line: Huh? Yeah that’s not going to happen but most people don’t realize that gravity is a killer. That’s right, the same force of gravity we enjoy everyday that lets us enjoy our morning cup of coffee and hang out with our loved one’s is the same force of gravity that’s putting stress on our body’s bones, joints and nerve system. Gravity keeps our feet on the ground, literally, by pulling our bodies towards the center of the earth.

Why it Matters: Gravity on our skeletal system can lead to early spinal degeneration and arthritic changes. We love gravity for the many gifts it offers us. Sure, it would be tough to play fetch with Butch if it wasn’t for our good friend gravity. However, gravity is putting excessive stress on your misaligned skeletal system that can slowly lead to early degenerative disease and neurological imbalances.

Unfortunately, we can’t suspend gravity or reverse the aging process. But, we can make smart decisions about our health care to stay healthy and active.

One of the best ways you can stand up to gravity is by ensuring that your spine and brain are as healthy as they can be. That’s what chiropractic care helps you do.

Next Steps: We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. Being healthy is more than just a matter of how you feel. It’s a matter of how you function. That’s the primary objective. It’s wonderful to feel better. It’s genius to function at your very best… Stay consistent with your care, curiosity and questions...

That’s a headache waiting to happen

heaache

Bottom Line: Are you connected to your phone and computer around the clock? Think about it, many of us aren’t more than an arm's length away from our phone at any time (even when we are sleeping). It’s part of living in a connected world. But all of that time on the phone cruising Amazon and Buzzfeed takes a toll. It can place a lot of tension on the supporting muscles of our neck and start to cause headaches.

Why it Matters: Messaging on WhatsApp, updating Instagram, and commenting on your friends Facebook page is fun. However, the hours per day we spend on our phones and computers can be a big contributor to tension headaches. Thankfully, you don’t need to throw away your phone to start solving the problem. Visiting a chiropractor has been shown to decrease both the frequency and severity of tension headaches. Chiropractors are the best natural health care option for people suffering from headaches.

Next Steps: Share this research with your friend who has the most followers on Instagram. If they are spending a lot of time engaged online, and taking awesome pictures, then they are very likely suffering from tension headaches as a result of their posture when using their phone. As a matter of fact, copy a link to this article right now, post it to Instagram, and tag them! They’ll be happy you did.

I like to pretend that headaches are just my memories fighting each other.

heaache

Bottom Line: Did you know that one of the side effects of headache medications is….well…headaches! Yes, many prescriptions that are taken for headaches tend to actually contribute to headaches. But, headache sufferers may not need to take these medications to find relief. New research indicates that chiropractic care can significantly decrease the frequency of tension headaches.

Why it Matters: Headaches are a pain. Literally and figuratively. Too many people (maybe even you or someone you know) have had to take time off work, or even miss an important social event due to a headache. In short, they dramatically decrease your quality of life! Well, medications are no longer the only answer to relieving your headaches. Gentle, effective chiropractic care has been shown to reduce muscle tension, improve posture, and improve the quality of life for people suffering with headaches starting on the first visit!

Next Steps: We all know someone we work with that has to leave early or take time out from work due to headaches. Take this information and share it with them. You would be surprised how many people don’t know that chiropractic care may help them get their life back and reduce their headaches.

Happiness is…not having a headache.

heaache

Bottom Line: Wake up. Go to Work. Suffer with a stiff neck. End the night with a headache. Repeat. Hopefully, this doesn’t sound familiar. But for millions of people this is their daily cycle. The good news? It doesn’t need to be that way. Studies have shown that people who utilize chiropractic care can improve the range of motion in their neck and also decrease the severity of their headaches.

Why it Matters: New research from the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine indicates that chiropractic care may be the most effective way to get rid of tension headaches. The researchers found that patients who sought chiropractic care had a significant decrease in the frequency and severity of their headaches. These patients also saw improvement in the range of motion of their neck. This helped them have a higher quality of life, with less pain and better overall function!

Next Steps: Do you know someone who sits all day at a desk for work? Our posture at work, looking at computer screens, can cause our neck muscles to become tight and stiff. Often, this leads to tension headaches. Take this information and share it with a family member who spends a lot of time at the computer and suffers from headaches. Chiropractic care may be the answer they are looking for!

Approach with Caution: Migraine in Progress

may promo

Bottom Line: What’s more dangerous than sitting on a dock next to a baby sea lion (you have to see the viral video)? No, it’s not bungee jumping at the Grand Canyon. It’s approaching someone who has a migraine headache! Let me set the stage. You reach out to Jim with a few questions at work. Instead of the typical Jim, you seem to encounter Jim’s evil twin who responds with short, snippy responses that seem way out of character. Well, it's not you. Believe it or not that’s Jim’s headache talking. New research has shown chiropractic care can provide over a 50% reduction in pain by the first follow-up.

Why it Matters: Over 75% of adults suffer from headaches, many with migraines. So what can you do? Take medication everyday? Curl up in bed and take a few days off from life? Well, new research shows that chiropractic care can decrease the frequency AND severity of headaches. And instead of getting upset with Jim the next time he has a migraine, do him a favor that will drastically improve his quality of life. What could that favor be? Keep reading…

Next Steps: We all know people who constantly suffer from migraine headaches. Take this information and give it to a friend or coworker who you know has struggled with migraine headaches. There are many people who don’t know that the best treatment for their headaches may be in a chiropractor's office instead of at the bottom of a pill bottle. This information just may change their life!

Bottom Line: Midwives, doulas, and OB-GYN’s can all be important during pregnancy. Each has a special role to play. Whether its support, education, or even delivery; your prenatal team is there to make sure you have a safe and memorable birth experience. But, when it comes to relieving pregnancy related back pain there is no better choice than a chiropractor.

Why it Matters: Chiropractors around the world work hand in hand with midwives , doulas, and OB-GYN’s. For a chiropractor, their role is to help an expecting mom stay active, pain-free, and as comfortable as possible before and after delivery.

Next Steps: Take this information and share it with your OB-GYN, midwife, or doula. Let them know you have a chiropractor on your prenatal care team! Research supports the use of chiropractic care during pregnancy. It’s “evidence” they may need to know to make a smart decision.

How to Stay Pregnant Longer (just kidding)

may promo

Bottom Line: 90% of women who have chiropractic care during pregnancy wish they would stay pregnant for another 6 months. Ok, ok, that was a joke. But what is no joke is that research supports chiropractic care as one of the safest and most effective options for assisting with pregnancy related low back pain.

Why it Matters: Even with all the changes that occur in a woman’s body during pregnancy, what doesn’t change is her daily responsibilities. So staying active and pain-free is essential for most women who can’t put the brakes on their life just because they’re pregnant.

Next Steps: Take this information and share it with a friend who is looking to start a family. You might be surprised how many women feel like there are no good options for dealing with the aches and pains associated with pregnancy. Thanks to you, they will now know chiropractic is their best choice!

How You May Be Able to Avoid Outpatient Surgery

may promo

Bottom Line: You may need surgery. That’s a line that no one looks forward to crossing. Fortunately, many surgeries are elective which means you may have a choice beyond going under the knife. As a matter of fact, a recent study showed people under chiropractic care were able to reduce their chances of having an outpatient surgery or procedure by 62%!

Why it Matters: Surgery is always the last option, never the first choice. Even outpatient procedures have considerable risks. Chiropractic care not only saves you money, but can reduce your downtime and risk of complications. Believe it or not, some people jump to surgery before trying chiropractic care. As Doogie Howser, MD once said, “there is so much to life that I don’t understand.”

Next Steps: If you or a friend has been recommended an outpatient surgery, ask your chiropractor their opinion first! Many large surgery centers have begun to use chiropractors as their first point of contact. This helps patients get the best medical advice from many points of view. It’s always better to stay conservative with your healthcare.

May-Promo-1.jpg

So, not only is saving money a benefit of chiropractic care, but you also can look forward to spending more time doing the things you love, with the people you love.

Next Steps: Take this information and share it with a friend who is sick and tired of taking too many medications. It could be their first step towards getting their life back. There may be a better, more natural way for them to find relief with chiropractic care.

Bottom Line: The Four Seasons, the Ritz-Carlton, The W, and….your local hospital. Wait, what?!? What do they have in common? All of them charge you an arm and a leg for a visit, but some you would rather visit than others. Let’s face it, heading to the hospital is expensive. Why it Matters: Hospital visits are unbelievably expensive. We have all heard the stories of the $400 aspirin. Well, it’s no fluke that people who are under the care of a chiropractor are more active and more engaged in staying healthy. And staying healthy can save you money.

Next Steps: Congrats! You are in the right place, but your friends may not be. Take this information and share it with a friend who has children. Getting their family under chiropractic care may end up saving them a ton of money. Looking out for each other’s health. That’s what friends are for!
